Brettenham is a picturesque village and civil parish located in the Babergh district of Suffolk, England. It is noted for its attractive rural setting and is located approximately 4 miles north of the historic wool town of Lavenham. Almost the entire built-up area of the village is designated as a Conservation Area, preserving its unique character and historic architecture.

Village History

Brettenham boasts a rich history dating back over a millennium.

Domesday Book: The ancient village is recorded in the Little Domesday Book around 1086, where it was listed as a settlement within the hundred of Cosford. The survey noted a church and a population of approximately 35 households.
St Mary's Church: The village is home to the Grade I listed Church of St Mary the Virgin. While a church was mentioned in the Domesday Book, the present structure primarily dates to the 14th century. It features an unusual design where the tower is built on the south side of the nave, rather than the west end.
Historic Estates: Brettenham Hall, first established in 1247, has a significant history. It was famously let to Prince Jérôme Napoléon (nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte) before 1847 and later became the home of Sir Thomas Courtenay Theydon Warner. The Hall and Park now form the setting for Old Buckenham Hall School.
